Well, it’s official, folks: films that are based on books make more money at the box office!
According to a study out of the UK, films that are based on books make about 53% more worldwide than films based on original screenplays. The report states that there is a “strong two-way relationship between publishing and the wider creative economy.” So, next time you lament that they’re going to mess up your favourite book, just remember: the film adaptation will make your favourite author more money!
What could be the reason for this jump in profit? As Kristian Wilson says over at Bustle, some books – especially of the YA variety (looking at you, Simon vs.) come with a built-in fandom, ready to jump on any opportunity to see their favourite book come to life on the big screen.
Speaking of book-to-film adaptations, have you been keeping up with all the incredible trailer drops in the past few weeks? Here’s a little round-up of the three adaptations we’re most excited for!
Have your say, Savvy Readers: What’s your favourite (or least favourite!) book-to-film adaptation? Can the movie ever truly be better than the book? Let us know in the comments or on Twitter @SavvyReader!
Happy reading (and watching!)
