50 Book Pledge Featured Read: The Wife

Happy Monday, Savvy Readers! We’re here with our weekly book suggestion (AKA 50 Book Pledge Featured Read) that will keep you up late into the night. Read on!

New York Times bestselling author Alafair Burke has written a(nother) stunning domestic thriller in the vein of Behind Closed Doors and The Woman in Cabin 10.

Angela’s met her husband, Jason Powell, while catering a dinner party in East Hampton. She assumed their romance would be a short lived fling—he’s a public figure, a brilliant economics professor at NYU, after all. But when they got married, Angela realized that this was her chance to reboot her life. Angela’s a woman with a tragic, dark past. Her marriage to Jason meant she and her son were finally able to move on with their lives.

But Jason’s career grew quickly, and he continued to become a celebrated public figure, placing Angela near the spotlight that she’s worked hard to avoid (read: her tragic, dark past). Anyways…. When a college intern makes an accusation against Jason, another woman (Kerry Lynch) also comes forward with an even more troubling allegation—contemporary issues that are (unfortunately) so real and so relevant today.

As Jason and Angela’s lives begin to unravel, Angela is forced to take a closer look at the man she married. When she’s asked to defend Jason in court, she realizes that doing so could cause her to unearth old secrets. And so she’s left to make the impossible choice between defending her husband and saving herself.

The Wife is probably best categorized as a domestic thriller or drama, as was The Ex. It reminded me of one of my favourite shows, The Good Wife (for the law/personal politics/current events aspect) and I also got vibes of Room by Emma Donoghue. It’s full of twists, it’s an addictive read, and you’ll be hooked from the first page to the last, because you won’t know who’s lying and who’s telling the truth.

Just how far will Angela go to protect the man she loves? Find out when you read The Wife. (Trust me, you’ll never see it coming).

Have you read anything by Alafair Burke? She’s Author of the Month at Kobo! Find out what that entails (including the awesome deals you can get on her books!!) here. Don’t forget to add The Wife to your 50 Book Pledge To Read shelf and tell us on Twitter @SavvyReader when you do!
