This Could Hurt is a charming and illuminating novel about the pivotal role work plays in our lives. The book follows five members of an HR department at a company undergoing major changes over the course of several years.

Rosa Guerrero fought her way to the top to become Chief of Human Resources at the Ellery Consumer Research Group. Even though she’s now in her sixties, she is still an impressive presence around the office. She is the definition of power and grace, and her staff is incredibly devoted to her.

Especially dedicated to Rosa is benefits VP Leo Smalls, a man who gives his whole life to the company. There’s also Associate Director Rob Hirsch, a happily married father of two, who finds himself drawn to his “work wife” Lucy Bender, an ambitious single woman looking to fill the void in her personal life. And for Kenny Verville, a senior manager, Ellery is temporary, as he searches for bigger opportunities to make his career-ambitious wife happy.

Jumping from each employee’s perspective, you see how the characters rise and fall, love and hate, and dream big and small. All the while, Rosa remains an anchor, fighting for her staff’s needs and job security in an unpredictable world.

When Rosa’s health takes a turn, it affects everyone around her, and Leo, Rob, Lucy and Kenny find themselves changed in ways beyond their reckoning.

If you loved The Nest and Just Like Family, this book is perfect for you! The work-related struggles and complicated relationships are relatable and touching. You can’t help but root for these incredibly flawed characters as they try to find their place in the work world.
