Continuing our month of Thriller Featured Reads, this week we’re reading the new book from Gilly Macmillan, author of What She Knew and The Perfect Girl. Gilly’s page-turning thriller (really, really fast page-turning, that is) is Odd Child Out. This time, she answers: how well do you know the people you love…?
Best friends Noah Sadler and Abdi Mahad have always been inseparable—as we learn in the “before the incident” chapters of the book. But near the beginning we learn that Noah has been found floating unconscious in Bristol’s Feeder Canal after a night out with Abdi. He’s placed in an induced coma in the hospital, and Abdi can’t—or won’t—tell anyone what happened.
Just back from a mandatory leave following his last case (which was the Ben Finch case, which you can read all about in What She Knew), Detective Jim Clemo is now assigned to look into this unfortunate accident. But what he thought was just the simple case of a prank gone wrong soon ignites into a public battle.
Noah is British, and Abdi is a Somali refugee. As the social tensions have been rising rapidly in Bristol, Noah and Abdi’s families fight for their sons and for the truth behind what happened. Neither family knows how far they will have to go, or what demons they will have to face.
But they will both suffer, because sometimes….
Yes, this book is a psychological thriller. But it’s also so much more than that! It touches on friendship, family, race, identity, immigration, illnesses and more. It’s fast-paced but emotional, intense but fascinating. Trust us, this is a thriller that will stick with you.
We can’t wait to see more of DI Clemo (fingers crossed!) in future novels from Gilly Macmillan. But for now, let’s be excited about Gilly coming to CANADA! Touring with other Killer Crime Club members Mel McGrath and Rene Denfeld, Gilly will be visiting Toronto and Calgary October 25th and 26th. More details (on both events) can be found here!
