Bookmarks: June 16th

Guess what, Savvy Readers? It’s Friday! Not only does it mean that the weekend is so close we can almost taste it (reference here), it also means that it’s time for another edition of Bookmarks! If you’re new to The Savvy Reader, this is when we recap all of our favourite bookish news, links, photos, and tweets of the week. So let’s dive in!

1. The Weeknd Shoots Music Video in the Toronto Reference Library

There’s something so magical and beautiful about libraries and it seems like The Weeknd agrees! For his new music video for “Secrets”, The Weeknd chose to use a famous* Canadian library — the Toronto Reference Library — as a backdrop. So cool! Check out the video (and library) here.

*Fun fact: The Toronto Reference Library was also featured in Volume 2 of Bryan Lee O’Malley‘s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

2. Roxane Gay Talks About Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body on The Daily Show

This week one of my most anticipated books of the year, Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body by Roxane Gay, came out! On Monday, The Daily Show host Trevor Noah sat down with Gay to talk about the book. Watch the interview here.

3. YA Movie News Announced!

It was an exciting week for movie news, Savvy Readers! Becky Albertalli, author of Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, finally revealed who will play Blue in the film adaptation! (Warning: Potential spoiler alert if you click through to find out who it is.) Julie Murphy also shared some amazing news: they have found their perfect Willodean to star in the upcoming adaptation of Dumplin’. See who will star as Blue here and who’s playing Willodean here.

Favourite Tweet of the Week:

I’ve never shared a favourite tweet of the week before but this one was too lovely not to share. Lin-Manuel Miranda — adapting Hamilton lyrics, no less — took to Twitter to share his friend Jomny Sun‘s New York Times feature. Sun was interviewed about his upcoming book, Everyone’s a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too, comedy, and Twitter. It’s incredibly fascinating – read it here and learn more about Everyone’s a Aliebn When Ur a Aliebn Too here!

On that fun note, it’s time for me to get to my weekend reading! See you next week, Savvy Readers, and don’t forget to share any bookish news that we’ve missed in the comments below or on Twitter @SavvyReader.
