Welcome to another edition of Bookmarks, Savvy Readers! Did you have a good May? Here at the Savvy Reader team we’re incredibly excited for June, in part because of all the great books we’re reading this month! Not only that, we’re also excited for all of the book news each week. Speaking of which, let’s go over our favourite bookish news, links, and photos of the week!

1. Pop Quiz Time! Which Language Were These Books Originally Published In?

beautiful books

You know we can’t resist a good bookish quiz. Buzzfeed challenged readers this week on how much they know about books originally published in a different language. Take the quiz here. How did you do? Post your scores in the comment section below or tweet it to us @SavvyReader!

2. Just Announced: A Sequel to Katie Cotugno’s 99 Days

Yeeeeessss!!! As I’m sure you know, we’re huge Katie Cotugno fans here at The Savvy Reader, so we couldn’t be more excited to learn that a sequel to 99 Days is in the works! See the book announcement in Publisher’s Weekly here. Are you as excited as we are?

3. Annihilation Movie Gets a Thumbs Up from Author Jeff VanderMeer

I’m just going to come out and say it: Annihilation is the movie to watch in 2018. First off, it’s based off of the first book in Jeff VanderMeer’s amazing Southern Reach trilogy. Secondly, the cast is incredible (it will feature Natalie Portman, Gina Rodriguez, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Oscar Isaac, and Tessa Thompson!). And, if that’s not enough, it’s directed by Ex Machina director Alex Garland. Jeff VanderMeer had the chance to watch an early cut of the movie and he had nothing but great things to say. Read his thoughts here and learn more about Annihilation the book here.

Let’s end this week’s post with something fun! The Modern Love team at the New York Times hosted their fourth annual college essay contest and they’ve selected their winners. With love at the centre of the competition, the judges chose these entries to take top honours (out of nearly 2000 entries!). Which one is your favourite? Tweet your reviews to us @SavvyReader!

Do you have any bookish news and links to share with us, Savvy Readers? Send them (or tweet them) to us! We love hearing from you!
