Happy 2017 Savvy Readers! What better way to start the year off right than with a good book?
This year we’re kicking things off with a review of Live by Night by Dennis Lehane. On December 27th, the movie tie-in edition was released. The movie stars Ben Affleck, Elle Fanning, Zoe Saldana, and Sienna Miller. This book is—like a lot of other books—probably better than the movie. But we’ll let you read, watch and decide.
Live by Night follows the story of Joe Coughlin, who goes from petty thief to rum runner. The story of Joe’s family is the main subplot of the first part of the novel. His relationship with his father is so strained, but the reader also gets to see his father go from complete disappointment in his criminal son, to doing anything for him.
I was so intrigued to read about the prohibition and the way that gangs worked back in the roaring twenties. Reading about how Joe transitions and makes these connections that make him become the king of rum running was so cool!
The characters are so real. They fight for what they want, what they believe in, while also trying to survive in a gritty world. This is a world where people get double and triple crossed because that’s how they survive. They make tough decisions, even double crossing their loved ones in order to protect them.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and I think you will too. What do you say, is Live by Night going to be the first book you read in 2017? Let us know what you’re reading first and be sure to at least add this one to your TBR shelf (that’s just open to all the possibilities!)
