Hey Savvy Readers,
Happy October! I’m here to sum up the last week of September 2016 – where did it go? – in case you’ve missed one of our savvy savings, bookmarks, or sure signs that you’re a book lover.
The 50 Book Pledge
We love it when you tell your friends about the 50 Book Pledge! Even though it seems a little late in the season, anyone can join and set their pledge level – anywhere from 12 to 200 books! – at any time in the year. We’ve completed 73% of our 2016 Community Goal of reading 150,000 books. Have your friends join in to up our “total books read” from 109,945 to 150,000! We can do this, Savvy Readers!
This Week’s Featured Read
Emma Donoghue’s latest novel, The Wonder, has been shortlisted for the 2016 Scotiabank Giller Prize! HarperCollins Canada also interviewed the writer about her new book on Facebook Live (check it out here!), so you can get all the deets before you buy. Check out the synopsis and our review here. And what did our fellow readers think? Well, they won’t let you get through the season without giving it a read.
“No question for me that The Wonder is the historical of the year.” – Bill K., Goodreads.
“The Wonder is one of those books that you can’t help but fall right into.” – Rya, The Savvy Reader.
“No spoilers, just read it. This is the fourth Donoghue for me and she’s never disappointed.” – Sarah, Goodreads.
“I absolutely loved this book! unfortunately, I loved it so much I ended up reading it in less than two days” – Diane B., Amazon.ca.
“The writing is gorgeous, the characters are deftly drawn, the mood of the room in which Anna resides is evocative to the point of feeling claustrophobic (well, the author’s had some experience writing about that kind of space before, hasn’t she?)” – Kim, The Shadow Giller.
“I loved this book so much. So much.” – Emily M., Goodreads.
This Week on the Savvy Reader
Tuesday September 27 – Top 10 Reasons to Read Feminist Fight Club
Allie brought us 10 reasons – not that we needed ten (let alone one!) – to read Feminist Fight Club, Jessica Bennett’s part manual, part manifesto (*for a sexist workplace). This book is fantastic, and every reason Allie gives – from the hilarious terms (manterruption?) to the solid advice – will just make you want it more.
Wednesday September 28 – Savvy Savings!
If you haven’t been following along closely, you missed out this week – Autumn Imago was on sale for ONE DAY ONLY (did anyone catch the deal?!). But good news – you can still get Emma Donoghue’s Hood and Joanna Trollope’s Sense & Sensibility on sale! Click here to find out more.
Wednesday September 28 – Savvy Reader Twitter Chat: Bookmarks vs. Monsters
We tried something new this week – sharing our Twitter conversation with all of our wonderful blog followers. Have something to say in the conversation? Get the low-down and link to participate here.
Thursday September 29 – Signs You’d Rather Read Than Go Out on the Town
Jessica put together an amazing (and hilarious) list of signs that you’re a true book lover – basically that you’d rather cozy up on a Friday friend with your fictional friends than head out on the town. What do you think, Savvy Readers? Is this you in a nutshell?
Friday September 30 – Bookmarks
Another fun week with Karen on Bookmarks! The Giller shortlist, Short for Chameleon cover reveal, Hollywood’s most powerful authors… the book news is never-ending, and we’re your one stop shop for all of it!
Friday September 30 – Our Favourite September Bookstagrams
With September coming to an end, we had to wrap up our favourite September bookstagrams for you. These cool pics and Instagram accounts should not go amiss. Check them all out here!
