The Best Back to School Books

Hello Savvy Readers!

We are officially into September (where on earth did the summer go??), which means some of our readers may be headed back to school. On the flip side, some of you may have already been out of school for a while. In either case, this time of year can be very nostalgic, so in honour of fall and September, we’ve rounded up some of the best “back to school” books that might make the transition out of summer and into school a little easier!9e3Ve.gif

For Adults:

Leave Me by Gayle Forman

Ah September. New school year, new jobs — it’s a season for everything new. But what if we just… didn’t? What if we didn’t get off at our stop to go to work or school? That’s exactly what Maribeth Klein does. If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to leave your life, you have to pick up Gayle Forman’s debut adult novel Leave Me!

The Wangs vs. The World by Jade Chang

y648-7

Did you ever think you’d pull your kids out of school for a cross-country family road trip? The Wangs vs. The World follows the Wang family as they do just that, in the hopes of saving their family, life, and ancestral pride.

Feminist Fight Club by Jessica Bennett

Heading back to work after summer vacation can be difficult, even more so if you work with people who, well… don’t make your life easy. From ‘manterrupters’ to ‘mansplainers’, Feminist Fight Club is a great lesson in all things feminist, and what better time to learn something new than back to school time!

For Teens:

Girl Mans Up by M-E Girard

86747

M-E Girard’s debut novel Girl Mans Up is one that will speak to the many of us who feel like we aren’t living our true life. Pen only wants to be herself, but why is that so hard for everyone to accept? A relatable novel that all high school students should check out.

As I Descended by Robin Talley

y648-8

High school drama has nothing on As I Descended. A book that combines a Shakespearian level of revenge with high school cliques and dark powers, this book takes wanting it all as far as it can go!

Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy

y648-6

Dumplin’ is the perfect love yourself no matter your size/shape book! Let’s face it, no matter what we look like, most of us could use a little help in the self-love department, and Dumplin’ will give you just that.

For Kids:

My Weird School: Back to School, Weird Kids Rule by Dan Gutman

y648-3

A book all about a camp that gets kids ready for back to school? Just what every parent dreams of! Back to School, Weird Kids Rule tells the story of the kids time at Camp Ockatollyquay before they have to head back to school!

The School for Good and Evil: The Ever Never Handbook by Soman Chainani

y648-1

Are you ready to go back to The School for Good and Evil? Well, this handbook is for you! From surviving dress code to kingdom maps, this handbook will help you survive your fairytale!

Little Critter: First Day of School by Mercer Mayer

y648-2

For the kid who is worried about being back at school, Little Critter is the book to grab! He has to pick out his clothes, pack his lunch and get ready for school — quite the job for such a little critter.

I hope these books got you sharpening your pencils and dusting off your notebooks! Let us know if you have any books that helped get  you, your kids, or your students ready for school and learning again on Twitter @SavvyReader or in the comments below!
