50 Book Pledge Round-Up: August 29-September 2

Savvy Readers!

It’s September!! Fall is basically here — I mean people are drinking pumpkin spiced lattes and there is Halloween candy in the stores. Fall also means that it’s a very exciting time in the publishing industry: awards season! Sorry I got distracted. I’m here to talk about the past week, which was also part-August, so let’s back it up a bit .

The 50 Book Pledge

You guys have seriously (seriously) been reading machines! Last week we had only read 95,793 books. That’s nothing compared to the 100,219 total we’re now at! That put us ahead to having completed 66% of our Community Goal! We’re less than 50,000 books away and there’s still so much wonderful time left in this beautiful year. So get on with it! What’s going on your Read shelf next? Here are some excellent ideas, if I do say so myself 👌 👌.

This Week’s Featured Read

I don’t think we could’ve stressed enough how amazing this week’s Featured Read, Another Brooklyn by Jacqueline Woodson was. In Allie’s words, this book was an “earth-shattering, heartbreaking novel filled with complex characters, issues, and writing.” How does that not intrigue you? Here’s what our fellow readers thought:

“A beautiful, fast-paced novel that captures the melancholy feeling of recalling a time, place, and feeling that can never be recovered.” – Sarah Beth, Goodreads

“As I read this book in one sitting, I was transported to my own childhood, hanging out with friends, figuring out how to navigate junior high, high school and leaving home. I am lucky enough to still be friends with those people with whom I grew up.” – Helen, Helen’s Book Blog

“This is a gorgeous book to be enjoyed in one rapturous sitting. A poetic rumination on memory, friendship, and childhood. I am a big fan of Woodson’s children’s fiction and enjoyed this slender but potent novel just as much.” – Vikki VanSickle, Goodreads

Another Brooklyn, Jacqueline Woodson’s first adult novel in twenty years is nothing short of remarkable. Her protagonist, August, is one of four girls coming of age in 1970s Brooklyn who become “always and all ways” friends until one by one their lives take different turns. Woodson is able to convey so much with so little—her words and sentences are beautifully crafted to fill you with emotion and understanding in a single line that feels effortless and light.” – Amazon.com Reivew, An Amazon Best Book of August 2016

Another Brooklyn is an exquisite novel. It captures both the innocence of childhood and the dawning realization of tough realities like race, class, and sexuality. I highly recommend it.” – Grace, Books Without Any Pictures
