After four days of intense debates, Canada Reads revealed its winner last week! Even though there could only be one winner, all of the champions and their books deserve a big round of applause. Did you watch the debates last week? Click here to read our recap as we cheered on Tracey Lindberg‘s Birdie and Lawrence Hill‘s The Illegal! (Pssst, aspiring writers: Lawrence Hill recently shared his tips on the best way to find an agent! Head over here to read his tips.)

In case you missed it, the first novel in Jeff VanderMeer‘s Southern Reach trilogy, Annihilation, is being made into a movie! This week, it was announced that Oscar Isaac has signed on to join the cast along with Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Lee, Gina Rodriguez and more. We can’t wait to see VanderMeer‘s story on the big screen. (If you’re not an Oscar Isaac fan yet, I’ll let this picture and this gif convince you to jump on board. Thanks, @ktvncnt!) Are you excited to watch Annihilation?

3. In More Movie News, Mudbound Reveals All-Star Cast

More exciting movie news coming your way! In an exclusive article, Variety revealed that many of our favourite actors and actresses are in the talks to star in Mudbound, an adaptation of Hillary Jordan‘s debut novel of the same name. Mudbound is a moving, powerful novel of forbidden love, betrayal and murder, capturing a dark period of the past, and I think will translate incredibly on screen. Find out more about the movie here.

4. The Nest is a Heather’s Pick!

Have you started reading Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney‘s captivating family saga The Nest yet? We’ve been buzzing about it here at The Savvy Reader and we’re so thrilled that Indigo’s chief book lover is loving it as well! Heather recently selected The Nest as a Heather’s Pick, saying “The Nest is more addictive than anything on Netflix right now. The antics of this dysfunctional New York family are infuriating yet somehow familiar. This is a must-read fiction debut.” Add The Nest to your 50 Book Pledge To Read Shelf here, and share your thoughts with us on Twitter @SavvyReader.

5. Are Mysterious Book Stacks the New Little Free Libraries?

How fun is this? In an effort to connect with fellow readers, book lover Shaheryar Malik has started a new trend of leaving book stacks from his personal library around New York City for strangers to find and enjoy. The books come with no obligation, but Malik does leave his contact information in each one with the hopes that the recipient will reach out. What a great way to give his books a second life! I wouldn’t say no to these mysterious stacks showing up on my doorstep… To learn more about Malik’s project, click here. (The photos are gorgeous.)

  1. This is an awesome bookish round-up, Karen! I know we have the Annihilation trilogy at home and this news might be just what my husband needs to actually read them. I’m pretty sure that I will be picking up The Nest this weekend and I’m going to check out that NYC book project right now!
