September: What We’re Reading This Month

Happy September, Savvy Readers! In my opinion, fall is one of the best seasons for reading: the weather is still warm enough (fingers crossed) to read in the park with a light jacket on and just cool enough to make snuggling up at home with a blanket, mug of tea, and a great book sound absolutely fantastic. So, for some September reading inspiration, here are some of the books our team is reading this month!

Cory is reading The Illegal by Lawrence Hill:

“Like The Book Of Negroes, The Illegal is a powerful novel that will challenge readers to re-examine what they believe about immigration and what they hear about the topic. This is an incredible story that you will want to talk about and pass on.”

Suman is reading The Art of Crash Landing by Melissa DeCarlo:

Melissa‘s debut book is simply extraordinary. It’ll make you laugh, cry, and want to call your mother asap.”

Jason is reading This is Your Life, Harriet Chance! by Jonathan Evison:

“I’m really excited for readers to get a chance to experience This Is Your Life, Harriet Chance by Jonathan Evison. It’s something different and creative that should really resonate with a lot of people. Filled with heart, humour and intelligence this is one of those rare unforgettable books.”

Shannon is reading Girl in the Woods by Aspen Matis:

“I just recently read Aspen Matis’s powerful story, Girl in the Woods. It’s out next week and I just feel like it’s a story every woman should read, especially young women leaving home for the first time. It’s about survival – Aspen spends 5 months hiking the Pacific Crest Trail from Mexico to Canada. It’s about healing – the reason Aspen sets out on her journey is to deal with a traumatic event that happened to her in her first week of college. It’s about finding yourself – she is literally alone out in the wilderness, and finds the strength to move forward, physically, spiritually and emotionally. I was so moved by Aspen’s story and I can’t wait to share it with the women in my life.”

Karen is reading Dumplin’ by Julie Murphy:

“Everyone is buzzing about Dumplin’ and I’m so excited to be reading it this month! It’s so refreshing to read a book that promotes body positivity. How do you get the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. I love it!”

  1. Starting off this month with: The Colony of Unrequited Dreams by Wayne Johnston, a fictionalized “autobiography” of Newfoundland politician Joey Smallwood; Ship of Brides, by Jojo Moyes which is a romance about war brides; and Snow Crash, by Neal Stephenson, a scifi novel.
