Us1. The 2014 Man Booker Prize for Fiction Longlist was announced!

The release of the Man Booker Prize longlist on July 23rd marks the first year that the Man Booker Prize is going global, and we are pumped! In her post earlier this week, Kaiti gives insight on some of the amazing authors and novels, including US by David Nicholls (author of the amazing One Day).

Through one family’s trip across Europe, Us explores the familial roles individuals play: as husbands and wives; as parents and children; as one “me” in a group of “we”. A difficult topic, but Nicholls reveals the complexities of marriage and family in a tender and compassionatealbeit at times, funnyway. It is a must-read.

2. 50 Shades of Grey trailer release

I’m not going to lie, when the trailer began, I thought that Universal Pictures decided to turn E.L James’ erotica into a horror flick a- la American Psycho. However, my suspicions were alleviated when the familiar Beyoncé-rific lyrics began and the protagonists, played by Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan, started viciously making out in an elevator. Marvel at the ridiculous amounts of sexual tension (and startling similarities to Twilight) below.

3.  Alligator Pie cover release on Quill & Quire!

Canadian KidLit classic Alligator Pie by Dennis Lee just celebrated its 40th anniversary of the original publication. In honour of this timeless read, HarperCollins conducted a search for a new illustrator. The winner, Sandy Nicholls, was annouced last winter and has been tirelessly working on the board book ever since.

As a special treat, Quill & Quire got a peek at the new cover long before its release in October! Get the full details and the adorable new cover illustration here.AlligatorPie_BoardBook

4. Pioneer Book in Provo, Utah gets a makeover!

Pioneer Book owner Rick Horsley knows that, because so many of us have trouble deciding what to read, we tend to judge books by their covers. He boldly decided to apply that principle to his store on 450 W Centre in Downtown Provo, Utah. Featured in the article by Utah’s Daily Herald, is a photo of the beautiful storefront with painted-on timeless classics. A tactic like that is sure to generate customers! Book nerds like ourselves are drawn to classics like Elizabeth Bennet is to Darcy, like Gollum to the ring or like Hamlet to avenging his father’s death!

  1. Great post! I’m excited about the titles on the Man Book Prize longlist, and just received my ARC of J by Howard Jacobson. Perfect timing. YAY!

I had no clue about the latest edition of Alligator Pie. It’s one of my favorite children’s book. I look forward to reading it with fresh illustrations.

    Thanks for the updates.
