Who Runs The World? (Geek) Girls.

Geek Girl: Model Misfit finally goes on sale this week! Inspired by Harriet, the ultimate Geek Girl, we decided to put together a list of our favourite Geek Girls from other books, tv shows and movies.

What would you add to this list?

1. Amy Farrah Fowler, The Big Bang Theory

Amy is a scientist with a Ph.D. in neurobiology, so she is typically the smartest person in the room. She’s also insanely funny and fiercely protective of her BFFs. Look at that face. What’s not to love about Amy?

2. Noa Torson, Don’t Look Now

Noa is a young computer hacker on the run. A hacker? Totally smart, totally Geek Girl material. Plus, Noa is tough. She’s a survivor. She’s endured a childhood marked by neglect and come out with her sense of self and energy for life fully intact. She’s pretty much a super-hero.

3. Cath, Fangirl

We could gush about Cath all day. She gets awesome grades in her freshman year at college, while also keeping up with her devotion to the fictional Simon Snow series. She rereads the books, hangs out in online forums, writes popular Simon Snow fan fiction, and dresses up like the characters for every movie premiere. Sound familiar, Harry Potter fans?

4. Liz Lemon, 30 Rock

Liz Lemon is one of the original Geek Girls. She swears by Ghostbusters, uses Star Wars references like it’s nobody’s business, and dressed up as Princess Leia for (spoiler alert) her wedding. If there was a Geek Kingdom, she’d be our queen.

5. Lisa Simpson, The Simpsons

Lisa is an icon for Geek Girls. She’s super knowledgeable about everything from astronomy to medicine, is up-to-date on world affairs, and she’s a feminist.  Plus, she loves books and watching cartoons!

6. Mac, Veronica Mars

At first glance, Mac is like any stereotypical geek in movies and TV:  Into computers and technology? Yup! Anti-social? Yup! Has a wide-ranging amount of knowledge of basically everything? Check! But like all geek girls, she’s more than that. She’s funny, beautiful, witty, and knows how to look out for herself.

7. Rory Gilmore, Gilmore Girls

Rory Gilmore is a brainiac. She got straight A’s throughout high school, was accepted into one of the most prestigious universities in the world and has read more books that any fictional character I’ve ever encountered (by age 12 she had read every book by authors with a Russian surname!). Plus, she ended up taking a job following Barack Obama‘s presidential campaign. She’s amazing.

8. Hermione Granger, Harry Potter

Nothing we can write about Hermione Granger will ever do her justice. She is a role model for us all. Brains, courage, loyalty. She’s got all the traits any Geek Girl could ever want.

9. Jessica Day, New Girl

What can we say about Jessica Day?  She’s endearingly awkward, likes to express herself through song, always has the best glasses, and is super into crafts. She has maybe written a little bit of Nancy Drew fan fiction and likes to makes Lord of The Rings references. She’s also smart,  stays true to herself and is a great role model for her students.

“I brake for birds. I rock a lot of polka dots. I have touched glitter in the last 24 hours. I spend my entire day talking to children, and I find it fundamentally strange that you’re not a dessert person. That’s just weird and it freaks me out. And I’m sorry I don’t talk like Murphy Brown, and I hate your pant suit and I wish it had ribbons on it to make it slightly cute. And that doesn’t mean I’m not smart and tough and strong.”

10. Jessica Anderson, Frenzy

Our final Geek Girl is actually a real-live person! Jessica is a designer here at HarperCollins Canada, as well as our resident Golden Girl. She creates ads, infographics and, much like Jessica Day, she rocks a lot of polka dots. What makes Jess a Geek Girl? She’s insanely-smart, an avid reader, super into typography, and is a proud old lady at heart.
