HCC March Madness: Recap of Round 1

That was quite the first round of HCC March Madness!

Thank you all for voting, for tweeting, and for cheering on your favourite titles. You certainly made that first round an exciting one.

In our first-ever non-fiction bracket, @HarperCollinsCa, we saw A Purpose-Driven Life, taken out by the play-in title, The Mother Tongue. All three rock bios competing also went out in the first round (despite all my cheering for The DirtI love that book). And, in our cutest competition, one adorable book about the world’s worst dog took out one adorable pop star’s bio. Sorry Justin Bieber!

Over in the YA bracket, @HCCFrenzy, it was no surprise to see Divergent receive a lot of support. #DivergentNation is a force to be reckoned with! Moving forward we also have three classics from my childhood, Bridge to Terabithia, Charlotte’s Web, and Prince Caspian. Can you believe Charlotte’s Web is celebrating its’ 60th anniversary this year?

Now to our two fiction brackets! In @SavvyReader your ‘Certified Savvy Read’ Secret Daughter is still in the running. This week it’s up against chick lit darling @LindseyKelk’s I Heart Paris. In another match-up the Queen of Mystery, Agatha Christie, is up against one of today’s hottest fiction writers, Jodi Picoult. That will be a tough one!

And finally, @HCCLibraryLove saw books by big name authors fight hard, but lose by small margins in the first round. Lawrence Hill, Colum McCann, Hilary Mantel, Gregory Maguire… unbelievable! But then, when you look at all the authors still competing in Round 2 you realize that this is one bracket stacked with high profile authors! How do we even chose who to vote for??? The competition in this bracket is only going to get tougher.

Now, it’s up to you to decide who moves through into Round 3! Remember, you can vote every hour and you can enter to win ALL 64 BOOKS competing once a day. Don’t forget to tell us who you’re championing. You could win a prize!

It’s time for Round 2 of HCC March Madness!
